The ScotRail Alliance has appointed UK-based Mott Macdonald to provide design services for the Inverness railway station improvement project in Scotland.

Mott Macdonald will produce detailed designs for the modernisation of frontage, forecourt and concourse at the new station.

Redevelopment of the railway station is expected to cost £6m and is scheduled for completion in 2018.

Work to be conducted under the upgrade project includes improving shopping options in the concourse and creating an improved environment on Academy Street.

The links to Falcon Square and the bus station will also be upgraded.

The arrival of the high speed train fleet will begin from late 2018 onwards, in order to provide enhanced journeys from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Perth to Inverness.

Track improvements between Aberdeen and Inverness will also take place to increase commuter services on the line.

Inverness station has already received close to £2m in funding from the Scottish Government's Scottish Stations Fund, which is investing in the region's existing and new railway stations to improve access to the railway network for people across the country.
