A design for a movie museum and convention centre has been approved by New Zealand’s Wellington City Council.

Film-makers Sir Peter Jackson and Sir Richard Taylor are supporting the project. Designed by Studio Pacific Architecture, the three-storey convention centre and movie museum will be located on the capital's waterfront and will require an investment of $150m.

Wellington City's deputy mayor Justin Lester said: "The Movie Museum will provide a one of a kind experience, so it’s absolutely appropriate we deliver a one of a kind design.”

City Council’s Economic Growth and Arts Committee chair Cr Jo Coughlan said: “Construction alone will deliver a $44 million boost to Wellington's economy and ongoing benefits of $38 million per year in GDP.

“It’ll be a huge boost to our offering in the lucrative convention market, providing a remarkable visitor experience for the delegates that will provide a competitive advantage for Wellington."
