Architect Mia Lehrer and Associates (MLA) alongside partners Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and global design and innovation firm IDEO has been selected by the US City of Los Angeles to design a new public park at First and Broadway.
The new FAB Park will connect with the existing Grand Park and feature a split-level restaurant, as well as an array of sculpted shade canopies designed by OMA. Designs incorporate themes of food, art, and land to celebrate the diversity of the city.
MLA’s president Mia Lehrer said: "We are excited to have the opportunity to design this destination park, providing Los Angeles with a new place to experience nature and culture.
"We also want to thank Councilman José Huizar for his leadership and vision in bringing a new park to Downtown LA and the city’s Bureau of Engineering for leading a thoughtful process for design."
A collection of shaded outdoor rooms will be available beneath the broad canopied trees and will be sized for small group gatherings.
OMA’s partner Jason Long said: "Our design for the restaurant is a dynamic building that facilitates two distinct levels of service, with quick and casual on the ground and refined and elegant above.

In collaboration with the Mayor’s Office, the 14th Council District Office, and the Department of Recreation and Parks, BOE conducted a design competition to obtain ideas from local professionals.
In 2013, the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks bought the 1.96-acre site from the state. The Bureau of Engineering (BOE) will perform overall project management.
