Islington footbal pavilion

UK-based architect LK2 has completed its redevelopment of Market Road’s football pitches and pavilion in Islington, London.

Awarded by the London Borough of Islington Council, the scheme involved thorough reconstruction works at the site, which included two full-size and three new, small-sided, third-generation football turf pitches.

The project features advanced environmental efficient technologies that include installation of an underground rainwater harvesting system.

It has been able to offer a 30% reduction in the borough’s carbon footprint, and was also the first artificial pitch laid in the UK capital by L2.

The firm was also responsible for constructing a dynamic metal-clad modern changing room for the local community players.

This project had been able to prevent the dispersion of 99 local youth football teams and also benefit 28 adult teams.

"Islington Borough Council’s investment in Market Road has resulted in a fantastic boost in the community’s morale and a positive attitude to sport."

LK2 director Andrew Kitchen said: "Islington Borough Council’s investment in Market Road has resulted in a fantastic boost in the community’s morale and a positive attitude to sport.

"We are really proud of the final outcome of the Market Road project, not only is the building a high-spec facility, but the scheme has also enabled so many local teams to continue and that’s the grassroots of football and where the next generation of footballers come from so we are delighted.

"We were able to ensure that the building was both energy-efficient and robust, which was an important aspect of the project and the client’s brief."

It is in-line with the council’s initiative to encourage engagement of the local people for the sport. The council intends to increase the number of teams using the site from 127 to more than 200.
