Finnish engineering and service company KONE has started installing its elevators at the Kingdom Tower construction site in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Owned and developed by Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), Kingdom Tower project is expected to stand at more than 1km-high when it is completed in 2018.

Kone will manufacture and install 57 elevators and eight escalators for the development, which was announced in 2014.

All services related to the plan and design of vertical transportation systems have been provided by the company’s Saudi Arabian joint venture firm, Kone Areeco, over the past two years.

Pre-installation works concerning the fitting of the elevator system’s guiderails are expected to commence towards the end of this year.

Once the Kingdom Tower’s central structure rises, installation of the guiderails and elevator cars will follow.

"Kone is the only vertical transportation service provider in the world capable of delivering what we need at the Kingdom Tower."

The project’s next phase will address the manufacture and delivery of Kone’s vertical transportation solutions, which include DoubleDeck elevators, supported by the Kone UltraRope technology, as well as the new People Flow Intelligence solutions.

JEC CEO Mounib Hammoud said: "Building the tallest tower in the world is about human ingenuity and the strength of the materials used.

"Based on this premise, Kone is the only vertical transportation service provider in the world capable of delivering what we need at the Kingdom Tower, specifically the capability of travelling at a speed of over 10m per second with DoubleDeck elevators to reach the highest liveable floor in the world in 52 seconds."

Kone’s high-speed elevators will travel 660m to the observation deck.

"Furthermore, with the use of Kone UltraRope, which is one-third of the weight of traditional ropes, we will be able to fit the DoubleDeck elevators with normal machines, a huge advantage that will enhance the sustainability of the Kingdom Tower by consuming much less power," Hammoud added.
