The John Jay College of Criminal Justice has opened a new $600m, 14-storey building on 59th Street between Tenth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue in Manhattan, New York, US.

The new 625,000ft2 facility was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

It contains three lecture halls, 65 classrooms ranging from 16 to 45 seats, instructional and research laboratories, academic quads, a conference centre and faculty offices.

The new building has a low-rise portion, called the podium, which contains classrooms, lecture halls, seminar rooms, administrative space and student activity areas.

The building contains a moot court for mock court activities; this room mirrors a real courtroom with furnishings including a jury box, judge’s bench and gallery seating for 100.

The building will feature a sculpture in memory of the 68 members of the college community who died during the 9/11 attacks.
