Ground has been broken at the Shaza Kempinski 180-room hotel project in Doha, designed by SOMA Architects.
Shaza Kempinski is to be constructed by developer Domopan in partnership with Kempinski Hotels. The hotel will be located between the souks, Doha’s traditional commercial district, and is on a thoroughfare opposite the IM Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art.
The alcohol-free, Sharia-compliant hotel rooms will stand 15 floors above ground.
The building will have three basements, a ballroom, two restaurants, a spa, a business centre and a cigar lounge, as well as a celebrity chef-run restaurant and outdoor pool terrace on the roof.
SOMA founder Michel Abboud said: "We are thrilled to see work on Shaza Kempinski reach this important construction milestone.
"The hotel will serve guests looking for the utmost in luxury and innovative design and upon completion, it will be a key element in an area undergoing incredible transformation. We are proud to add our distinctive design to this emerging skyline."
Shaza Kempinski’s outer glass façade was silkscreened with an Islamic-inspired Arabesque pattern, which was then manipulated using Grasshopper parametric design software.
The smooth exterior’s design was inspired by Doha’s desert climate.
The Doha hotel will join Kempinski’s portfolio of hotels across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
