The One

UK’s Foster + Partners has unveiled designs for an 80-storey mixed-use tower on a downtown site at One Bloor West in Toronto, Canada.

Rising to 318m, the new The One will be Toronto’s second-tallest building, combining a residential tower with a retail base integrated with the city’s underground pedestrian network, the PATH.

According to Foster + Partners, the base of tower will consist of nine levels of shops, cafes and restaurants, arranged around a soaring 60m atrium.

A flexible ‘urban room’ will be elevated two storeys above street level, protected from the weather and accessible by two express escalators.

Reached through a glass bridge at level 12, the apartments will incorporate winter gardens with city views and the façade is to be characterised by warm metallic tones and a bronze exoskeleton frame.

Unveiled by developer Sam Mizrahi, The One is planned to be built on a site previously occupied by the 114-year-old Stollerys building, which was demolished by Mizrahi in January.

The development is expected to house eight levels of retail shops, 600 parking spots and some 560 residential units, according to Mizrahi.

Foster + Partners, which is collaborating with Core Architects on the development, said that the building will be ‘a new model of vertical retail in the city’.

The building is slated for completion by 2018, while the design is yet to receive approved by local officials.
