American architectural firm Ennead Architects has renovated and expanded the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
Work under the renovation included the modernisation of a brick neo-Georgian structure that is spread over an area of around 30,000ft² in the museum.
Ennead Architects was quoted by Dezeen as saying: "The result is an architecturally dynamic building marrying old and new, with an expansion that stands as a striking counterpoint to the original neo-Georgian structure.
"The design strengthens and renews the museum’s identity and experience while extending its legacy into the future."
Ennead also added a new 13,280ft² cantilevering wing where both temporary and permanent exhibitions can be held, Dezeen reported.
The zinc-clad cantilever can be reached by a glass staircase and is encased in floor-to-ceiling glass panels. It offers panoramic views at the angled terminus of the structure.

By GlobalDataThe museum’s main facade has also been redesigned by replacing four large columns with a screen made of aluminum and precast concrete.
Ennead created a new angled concrete facade for the existing western wing at the museum.
The newly added vertical glass windows on the north side of the museum will get natural light.
"The transformation goes beyond the building itself to the site, where a new landscape and sculpture garden extend the museum beyond the walls of the building to forge stronger connections to the city and the surrounding neighbourhood," added the company.
