Design of The Ronald O. Perelman performing arts center (Perelman Center) at the site of the World Trade Center in New York has been unveiled.
Set to open in 2020, the centre will produce theater, dance, music, film, opera, and multidisciplinary work while offering a range of amenities for visitors.
REX's principal Joshua Prince-Ramus said: “The Perelman Center is an immensely flexible canvas on which directors can script the patrons’ entire experience from their very entrance into the building. It is a mystery box, a constant source of surprise for theatergoers and the community. We are honored to be involved with such an important project on such an important site."
Designed by New York-based REX, the Perelman Center has gleaming glass towers on the north side of the 9/11 memorial.
Wrapped in translucent, veined marble, the approximately 90,000ft² building will be laminated within insulated glass and will have three auditoria and a rehearsal room. These can combine to form seven performance spaces for eleven arrangements.
The last cost estimate for The Perelman Center reached $243m.
