Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has unveiled a design for a new central business district adjacent to Masaryk railway station.

The firm has collaborated with the city and local partners to regenerate a brownfield urban site, which has been derelict for several decades.

The plan integrates the city’s transport networks including suburban and domestic rail services, as well as coach and bus terminals.

According to the plan, Masaryk station will also become the future city terminus for a new airport rail link to Vaclav Havel International Airport.

The mixed-use development combines Prague’s districts 1, 3 and 8, minimising the impact of the elevated Wilsonova Highway separating them.

The project involves a series of buildings and interconnecting public spaces along Na Florenci Boulevard.

A new public plaza created adjacent the railway station provides a gateway to the city and links with Namesti Republiky Station on Line B of the city’s metro network.

The new central business district will respond to the demands of the city’s growing service and IT requirements for flexible Class A office accommodation.

The project design also creates a number of varied civic spaces, including plazas at the station’s main entrance midway along Na Florenci Boulevard at the corner of the Na Florenci and Opletalova axis, as well as at the coach and bus terminus in Prague District 8.

ZHA project associate Craig Kiner said: "In collaboration with our partners and the city, we have developed an urbanism for the site that draws inspiration from our analysis of the city and the site’s dynamic circulation networks, creating an architectural response that is sensitive to context, unifying in aspiration and contributes to the urban fabric of Prague."
