The UK has announced completion of the £1.2bn construction phase of a project aimed at modernisation of military accommodation.

Termed as ‘Project SLAM’, the initiative had been continuing for 12 long years and has improved living accommodation of single service personnel across 52 locations in the country.

Around 121 separate projects had been included under Project SLAM, which had resulted in modernisation and new developments totalling more than 22,000 bedspaces from Scotland to Cornwall.

Debut Services is a joint venture between Lendlease and Babcock Support Services and had been responsible for the project, for which the contract was awarded in 2002.

Debut Services Brian Johnson said: "Over the last 12 years Project SLAM has consistently delivered first class single living accommodation for the armed forces across the UK.

"We are delighted to have completed over 22,000 beds, dramatically raising the bar for living accommodation for Britain’s servicemen and women and improving the built environment where our armed forces live and work."

Accommodations at 12 sites, including Woolwich Barracks and Cavalry Barracks in Hounslow, have undergone refurbishments to modern standards.

New accommodations, totalling 319 blocks have been built as a part of the project, says UK Ministry of Defence and Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).

The new accommodations developed under the project include rest rooms, a communal area, kitchen and drying room.

DIO programme and projects delivery director air vice marshal Elaine West said: "…the quality of build across the programme has been well received and provides a lasting legacy of modern living accommodation for highly deserving occupants."
