David Chipperfield RA

British architect David Chipperfield will be leading a scheme for redeveloping historic buildings, which has been initiated by the Royal Academy of Arts in London, UK.

The renovation will include construction work to link Burlington House with Burlington Gardens for the first time, and will open-up access from the properties to the schools.

It will also lead to the development of new public areas, including customised spaces for exhibitions and displays across the site for the historic collections, contemporary art projects and new work by the Royal Academicians.

The academy also plans to establish a double-height lecture theatre for its education programme, featuring 260 seats and enhanced facilities.

Renovation has been scheduled to be completed by 2018, when the Royal Academy will be celebrating its 250th anniversary.

"We can create a dedicated, new, state-of-the art home for learning, where visitors can take part in a vibrant and enhanced programme."

The project contractor has been selected and architectural modifications are expected to begin in October.

Grant-giving arts organisation, Clore Duffield Foundation, has also awarded a £1m grant for developing a new Clore Learning Centre as a part of the major redevelopment for Burlington Gardens.

Royal Academy of Arts secretary and chief executive Charles Saumarez Smith said: "We are extremely grateful to the Clore Duffield Foundation for their generosity towards the Burlington project.

With their support of the Clore Learning Centre, we can create a dedicated, new, state-of-the art home for learning, where visitors can take part in a vibrant and enhanced programme of activities, events and workshops throughout the year from 2018 onwards."
