Colby College residence hall Goddard-Hodgkins in Maine, US, has secured LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council.
The 8,160ft2 building, originally built in the late 1940s, has been extended with 1,900ft2 of new space, including a new study area, an elevator, reclaiming centres and interior bike rooms.

The building’s eco-friendly measures include new energy-efficient windows, motion sensors and timers to reduce electricity consumption, additional heating zones and the installation of efficient lighting and equipment.
Energy recovery systems incorporated in the building help it to capture heat energy from warm air exhaust, which is then used to partially reheat incoming fresh-air ventilation.
The building also uses low-flow faucets, showers and dual-flush toilets to reduce water consumption.
