Køge Nord Station design

COBE-led architecture team comprising COWI and DISSING+WEITLING has won a contest to design Køge Nord Station in Denmark.

The COBE-led team beat competitors from Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, French firm Arep Ville and fellow Danish firm Gottlieb Paludan Architects.

The winning proposal envisions a transport hub for the 90,000 passengers using the facility daily and brings together high-speed trains, local trains and freeways connecting Copenhagen from the south.

COWI Bridges Scandinavia vice-president Jens Sandager Jensen said: "The pedestrian bridge is an elegant, simple and 225m-long steel construction with a light superstructure.

"It spans the freeway with a simple grip and is developed with great consideration to creating the best possible traffic flow for the freeway, local trains and high-speed trains.

"The closed side in the south gives room for both vista and intimacy, movement and repose, and contributes to the experience of the atmosphere and joy of travelling." 

"The bridge is to be constructed over a relatively short time period during the winter of 2016 / 2017."

The pedestrian bridge will stretch east to west across the existing freeway and above the double-tracked rail line.

In addition, the proposal includes a new station and an accompanying park and ride facility.

DISSING+WEITLING partner and CEO Steen Savery Trojaborg said: "Køge North Station is a very unique project, both in terms of architecture and engineering.

"The station will be part of many people’s everyday life and we have focused a lot on the flow across the freeway.

"The difference between the open side in the north and the closed side in the south gives room for both vista and intimacy, movement and repose, and contributes to the experience of the atmosphere and joy of travelling."

In a bid to offer a tactile surface specifically warm and welcoming for pedestrians, the bridge will be lined internally with wooden lamellae, while the external structure will be clad with perforated steel plates.

The south facade is to be covered but the north facade will offer a 180° panoramic view across the cultural landscape and traffic.

COBE founder and creative director Dan Stubbergaard said: "This development will be reflected and materialised in the bridge and the surrounding park and ride facility that besides being the traffic junction of the region, also will be a distinctive landmark for the area and a symbol of Denmark’s strive towards a sustainable future."

Køge North Station is set for completion in 2018; construction on the bridge will run in short periods during the winters of 2016 and 2017.
