The New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) has selected Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) to design a new police station in Melrose.
To be spread over an area of around 43,500ft², the station will see an investment of approximately $50m, ny.curbed.com reported.

The proposed 59ft tall building will be the New York City Police Department’s (NYPD) 40th precinct.
This new station provides spaces for officers to reduce stress and promote physical activity, BIG said in a statement.
The station will be built using non-reflective materials such as sandblasted concrete in a bid to improve the building’s energy performance, reported the website.
Said to become the first NYPD station to have a green roof, the state will have a community meeting room and clerestories.

By GlobalDataThe windows surrounded by angled, tapered panels will be integrated into the exterior facade that are invisible from the street, thereby increasing privacy and security, Dezeen reported.
The building will also house information kiosks, and space to hold classes, in addition to having a courtyard with a training area and climbing walls.
BIG was quoted by The Architect’s Newspaper as saying: "We’ve detailed the precast such that small glazed openings read as a perforation of the larger panelised system.
"The perforation here calls attention to the special function of this particular building block, but also allows for a transparency that is essential to the way NYPD and the City of New York are conceiving of this new type of public space."
