Inter IKEA Centre China has inaugurated the LIVAT shopping centre at Wuhan in China, which is the third to be designed by UK-based architecture and engineering firm BDP.

Inter IKEA Centre China is a localised unit under the Denmark-based shopping centre developer, Inter Ikea Center Group.

BDP had also been responsible for two other LIVAT retail complexes in the country, which were inaugurated last year in Wuxi and Beijing.

The centre is strategically located in the Qiaokou district of Wuhan city centre. It is supported by strong transport facilities such as a raised bridge connecting it to the light rail system, multiple bus stops and parking for 4,700 cars.

Spanning a 172,000m² area, the centre houses an IKEA store as a key central anchor along with hypermarket, international and domestic retailers, a substantial food and beverage offer, multiplex cinema and ice rink.

"The shopping facility is based on a strong Scandinavian theme with local Wuhan references."

BDP acted as architect, civil and structural engineer, landscape architect, interior and lighting designer for the entire project.

The shopping facility is based on a strong Scandinavian theme with local Wuhan references, spread over three levels under a sweeping, glazed roof.

While bridges, escalators and nodes connect the different levels and zones, a lilypad vertical circulation structure forms the centrepiece of the scheme.

The building features covered car parking on the ground floor, along with welcome halls and a road that connects the site from the north to the south.
