BAM UTC 2 Sheffield

UK-based BAM Construction has won a £9.3m contract to construct the second University Technical College (UTC) in Sheffield.

Intended for the college’s human sciences and computing departments, the new development will be set up at the Olympic Legacy Park in Don Valley.

Scheduled to open in September next year, the college is planned to offer places to 600 students.

Bam will construct the four-storey building, which will have specialist teaching facilities on the ground and first floors, as well as a central atrium for a spacious, light, learning environment.

Around 10% of the building’s power requirements will be obtained from renewable sources, with consideration of Sheffield’s district heating.

Bam is currently developing the Oasis Academy Don Valley on the Park, and intends to move most of its Oasis Academy construction team to the UTC project.

Therefore, the project is likely to involve most of the same local suppliers, such as Sothall Roofing, Brebur, Jumbo Partitions, and Smith’s Decorators.

"These will be first-class facilities for students to learn critical skills that employers in Sheffield will need."

Bam Construction project director Paul Cleminson said: "These will be first-class facilities for students to learn critical skills that employers in Sheffield will need.

"We look forward to working with the local community to maximise the benefits of the project."

The firm is likely to start construction work for the project this October.

UTC 2 Sheffield is a joint undertaking by the Sheffield College, Sheffield Hallam University, and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Sheffield College strategic planning and business development executive director Andrew Cropley said: "The design makes the very best of the site and will provide an incredible learning environment for our students, with remarkable neighbours.

"BAM’s experience of this site and of building UTCs gives us even greater confidence that our building will be ready to welcome students from across Sheffield and beyond for September 2016."
