Bam WMG Academy UK

Netherlands-based construction giant BAM has started work for its first contract under the EFA regional framework at WMG Academy in Solihull, UK.

The firm won the £11m contract at Local Competition Tender with Option A, which has been used on behalf of WMG Academy for Young Engineers Solihull according to the Education Funding Agency Regional Framework.

The construction firm intends to complete the development by mid-2016.

Located at Fordbridge in north Solihull, the new centre will have the capacity for 640 students.

The academy will be focused on a broad base of engineering with science, and specialist attention being given to areas that are applicable to local employers in the automotive, aerospace and high value manufacturing sectors.

It will also train the students on ICT and digital technology as enablers to engineering, with supporting themes of enterprise and sustainability.

BAM construction director David Ellis said: "Not only will we bring modern first class construction techniques to this new building, but we’ll look to involve local companies and the community whenever possible so that it creates local benefits and opportunities."

"It will also train the students on ICT and digital technology as enablers to engineering, with supporting themes of enterprise and sustainability."

Employer groups including the EEF (the manufacturers’ association) and WMMC (West Midlands Manufacturing Consortium) have supported the new WMG academy development.

BAM Design will be responsible for the structural and civil designs of the development, which will have Maber as the architect.

Designs for the mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems will be handled by Cundall.

BAM International has also recently won a contract from Tanzania Airports Authority, which is worth more than €100m. The deal entitles the firm for the second phase development of Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
