Dundee City Council in Scotland has signed a contract with BAM Construction to build the £80.11m V&A Museum of Design Dundee.

BAM Construction will start work next month with completion scheduled for the end of 2017.

V&A Museum of Design Dundee will be located at the heart of the city’s wider £1bn Waterfront regeneration project and opens to the public in June 2018.

BAM Construction regional director in Scotland Doug Keillor said: "This is the most unique construction project that my team has ever been involved in, both in architectural vision and in the way it will be built.

"Watching it take shape over the next few years using a combination of local, national and international expertise, will be very satisfying."

The project is being delivered by Design Dundee, a partnership between the V&A and Dundee City Council, the University of Dundee, Abertay University and Scottish Enterprise.

"This is the most unique construction project that my team has ever been involved in."

The Scottish Government has agreed to provide £25m for the project, while £13.9m will come from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Dundee City Council has offered £6.5m and Creative Scotland contributed £5m.

Previously in 2010, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma & Associates had been chosen to build the museum, beating competition from Steven Holl Architects, REX, Snøhetta, Delugan Meissl Associated Architects and Sutherland Hussey Architects.

Dundee City Council administration leader councillor Ken Guild said: "This project will help to attract further investment into the city and we are already experiencing unprecedented levels of investor interest in Dundee.

"The building project itself will also bring considerable attention to Dundee as the vision of architect Kengo Kuma takes shape. We are already enjoying the benefits of the recent award of UNESCO City of Design status, which reflects our growing international reputation."
