Dubai Mall

Balfour Beatty’s Dubai-based joint venture Dutco Balfour Beatty has secured a £214m contract from Emaar Properties to expand the Dubai Mall.

Under the deal, Balfour Beatty will build a new fashion avenue in between the existing Dubai Mall and the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

The expansion will allow the mall to increase its annual capacity to serve more than 100 million visitors.

As part of the deal, Dutco Balfour Beatty will also offer additional access bridges, parking facilities and coordination with new and existing tenants.

The mechanical and electrical services will be carried out by BKGulf as part of a joint working agreement with Dutco Balfour Beatty.

BKGulf will use its in-house pre-fabrication facility to manufacture mechanical, electrical and plumbing modules off-site, which will save cost and time and improve safety in the heavily built-up area.

The contract award comes six years after Dutco Balfour Beatty completed its original contract to construct Dubai Mall.

Balfour Beatty CEO Andrew McNaughton said: "The Middle East is a growth region for the Group and we are very pleased to continue our partnership with Emaar Properties on the development of downtown Dubai, which builds on the original construction of the Dubai Mall."

The Dubai Mall currently features 1,200 stores and 160 food and beverage outlets, as well as an aquarium and underwater zoo.
