Northstar Changsha Centre

Atkins has been selected to provide architecture design services for the Northstar Changsha Centre expansion project in Changsha, in the Hunan province in China.

Northstar Delta site will be developed by Changsha Northstar Real Estate Development Company, creating a new, landmark centrepiece complex on behalf of the Government of the city of Changsha.

The centre will integrate residential, cultural, retail and commercial space at the riverside, and offer a central public space. It will comprise a super-tall 400m-high landmark office tower, a regional convention centre, department stores, a five-star hotel and serviced apartments.

Atkins senior design director Ian Milne said: "Our design ambition is to create a spectacular centrepiece to this important new urban quarter.

"Connectivity is a major concept in our design and we want to connect not only places, but people.

"The civic plaza will be located between the proposed iconic landmark tower and convention centre and will be an ideal meeting point due to its convenient location, plus the wide range of cultural and recreational activities that can be staged there."

The latest development is said to be based on existing road planning and has been designed to be pedestrian-friendl and sustainable.

The tops of the towers are ‘stepped’ to add differentiation to the overall shape, ensuring they create a unified group on the city’s skyline, Atkins said.

The convention centre has a sophisticated roof design and is expected to set new standards in passive energy-efficiency, Atkins claims.
