Schmidt hammer lassen architects and New Zealand-based Architectus have been selected to design the new central library in Christchurch.
The new 12,000m² library will be one of the projects in the recovery plan for the city of Christchurch, which was damaged by earthquakes in 2010 and 2011.

Schmidt hammer said the previous central library on Gloucester Street was badly damaged and that the land it stands on has been designated for the city’s new convention centre.

"It will provide easy access to digital technologies and local heritage collections. There will be exhibition and performance spaces, a learning centre, spaces to relax indoors and outdoors and activities to entertain and educate young people," Schmidt said.

Christchurch Central Development Unit (CCDU) has created the plans, which detail a central business district with a re-developed city square within a L-shaped green space.
The plans include an art stadium, a metro sports facility and a new 2,000-seat convention centre, as well as public amenities such as the hospital, courts and education facilities.
The city will be divided into zones for health, arts and entertainment, retail, and justice and emergency facilities.
