Alexandria Real Estate Equities has broken ground on the $500m Alexandria Center at Kendall Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US.

The 11-acre science and technology campus will feature five buildings with a laboratory and high-tech office building, as well as spaces designed to encourage collaboration.

The centre incorporates sustainable green features including a two-acre park, green landscaping and river access.

The first building will house Biogen Idec’s corporate office as it is planning to return to Kendall Square.

The six-storey building is slated to open in 2013.

The environmentally sustainable building has been designed by architectural firm Spagnolo Gisness & Associates.
