Sacramento County in California has approved plans to award a design-build contract to Otto Construction for the development of a new parking garage at Sacramento International Airport (SMF). 

The contract, valued at $229m, was approved by the county’s Board of Supervisors following a recommendation from airport staff. 

Otto’s proposal is said to have been selected for being the most cost-effective and for its provision to incorporate additional features. 

These features include solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations, offering further flexibility. 

This project is said to be the first design-build initiative in the history of Sacramento County.

Sacramento County Department of Airports director Cindy Nichol said: “Increasing close-in garage parking capacity is the number one opportunity we have to improve the guest experience at SMF. 

“By partnering with Otto Construction, our team is set to deliver a parking garage that is both beautiful and functional.” 

The total budget allocated for the garage stands at $390m, encompassing soft costs, owner’s contingency, and an allowance for potential cost escalation.  

Construction of the parking garage is a part of the $1.3bn SMForward capital programme, which is focused on improving customer experience at the airport.  

The programme is designed to enhance convenience, comfort, and accessibility for travellers, while also accommodating increasing passenger traffic.

“We’re thrilled to contribute to SMForward with the design and construction of a parking garage that integrates seamlessly into the Airport campus and contributes to the overarching enhancement of the passenger experience.” 

Besides, the project will employ local labour through the Community Workforce and Training Agreement (CWTA).  

Otto Construction will commence construction this Autumn (September through November 2024). 

The company has previously constructed the Terminal A parking garage in 2004. 

The Sacramento County Department of Airports, oversees the planning, development, operation, and maintenance of the county’s four airports. 

These airports consist of Sacramento International Airport, Executive Airport, Mather Airport, and Franklin Field.
