Construction company NCC has entered into a partnership with the City of Västerås to build a new school in Sweden.

This turnkey contract, which is valued at approximately Skr450m ($43.41m), will be registered under NCC’s Building Sweden division in the first quarter (Q1) of this year.

NCC Building Sweden head Niklas Sparw said: “We have a longstanding and successful history of collaboration with the City of Västerås when it comes to building schools.

“The new school in Fredriksdal will be our third ongoing school project alongside Drömfabriken and Carlforsska Gymnasiet.”

City of Västerås property department project manager Christer Gerhardsson said: “NCC has won the procurement and we are pleased to collaborate with them on the construction of the new school building in Fredriksdal.

“We have good past experience of conducting partnering projects with NCC from several major assignments in the city.”

The school, with a floor area of approximately 13,000m², will be designed to accommodate 700 students aged six to 16.

A 3,000m² sports hall and a large schoolyard are also a part of the plan.

The school building itself will comprise two L-shaped structures constructed from wood and brick, chosen to complement the existing local architecture in terms of colour, material, and design.

It will have a large geothermal heating and solar power system to minimise energy costs and support the environmental requirements for a Miljöbyggnad Silver rating.

The site’s infrastructure is being prepared to welcome another 450 students in the future.

Construction is set to commence in Q1 2024, with completion anticipated in late 2026.

Last month, NCC won a Skr150m contract to expand and refurbish the Rimforsa school in Östergötland, Sweden.

The turnkey contract in partnering form was awarded by Kinda Municipality.
