Construction company NCC has received a turnkey contract to expand Taatila elementary school in Lieto, Finland.

The agreement signed with the City of Lieto is valued at approximately Skr195m ($18.29m).

City of Lieto Technical Services director Jonas Nylund said: “The expansion will give us access to larger and more modern premises, which is much needed. We are pleased to have a highly skilled and experienced contractor in charge of this school project.

“The new school will make our city more attractive and we look forward to turning the first sod in April.”

A new two-storey high school building spanning roughly 8,000m², accommodating about 500 students from grades seven to nine, will be added.

Upon the new building’s completion, the current high school will be demolished, and the schoolyard will undergo redevelopment.

The planning and design phase of the Taatila school expansion project has been completed, paving the way for construction to begin.

NCC Building Nordics in western Finland head of department Esa Lehmusvuori said: “Together with the City’s various organisations, including the education, sports and technical administrations, we have designed the school to ensure the most fit-for-purpose and healthy learning environments both for students and for staff. We are proud to be part of this project.”

Construction is scheduled to start in April 2024, with an anticipated completion date in 2026.

The project will be registered in the NCC Building Nordics business area in the first quarter of this year.

Earlier in April 2024, NCC entered into a partnership with the City of Västerås to build a new school in Sweden.

The school, with a floor area of approximately 13,000m², will be designed to accommodate 700 students aged six to 16.
