NCC has started building Agnes Kulturhus, a 8,700m2 centre for culture and learning, for Gävle Municipality in Sweden.

The previous building has been demolished to construct the new centre, which will feature a municipal library, public facilities and space for cultural activities.

The previous library and its basement have been razed to ground. Work is underway to pull out the piles from the old building, following which excavation will be carried out to lay the foundation.

Piling work is anticipated to continue until the end of October.

All initial works, such as the floor slab and basement walls, will be done by early 2023, when work on the frame can start.

Gavlefastigheter project manager Lilianne Axelsson said: “The partnership is working really well in the project. We share the same view that it should be fun to go to work. We are an effective and flexible team, and help each other out when challenges or unforeseen events arise in the project and are always focused on what’s best for the project,”

NCC Building Sweden head Henrik Landelius said: “The planning is now complete and we will construct a building with a contemporary and appealing style of architecture to strengthen the Gävle brand. We are delighted that Gavlefastigheter has given us their trust, and we are looking forward to a long partnership.”

The new municipal library will serve as the centre for new meeting place in Gävle that will feature a library and other cultural spaces such as an art gallery, a specialised cinema, podcast studio, VR room, office, creative spaces, event hall and storytelling room.

Nyréns arkitektkontor has designed the building, which will feature a contemporary style with form, colour and materials blending well with the environment around.

Spread over five floors, the building will be almost twice the size of the earlier municipal library.

Agnes Kulturhus is slated to finish in summer 2024. This turnkey project will be undertaken in a partnering form.

The $27.60m (SEK300m) contract is being registered by NCC under its Building Sweden business segment for Q2 2022.
