The Government of Canada has announced the start of construction with a ground-breaking on its new National Defence Multipurpose Facility in Yellowknife. 

The project will receive an investment of approximately C$136m ($99.28m). 

Investing in the facility is part of Canada’s efforts to bolster the Canadian Armed Forces’ presence in the Arctic and northern regions of the world in response to evolving threats. 

The new 9,200m² building will be home to the Joint Task Force (North) and serve as headquarters for the 1st Canadian Rangers Patrol Group (1 CRPG). 

Currently, parts of the Joint Task Force (North) and 1 CRPG are dispersed across various temporary sites.

The facility will feature offices, classrooms, assembly areas, and spaces for vehicle maintenance and storage. 

It will be built on National Defence property in the Engle Business District (Phase 2). 

Expected to be finished by late 2026-27, the construction will sustain approximately 520 jobs. 

It further aims for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification. 

The Canada Department of National Defence collaborated with the contractor to identify optimal energy sources and building features, thereby ensuring compliance with greenhouse gas emissions targets. 

Canada National Defence Minister Bill Blair said: “The construction of this new multipurpose facility in Yellowknife will improve the Canadian Armed Forces’ ability to deploy to the Northwest Territories and is a significant step towards a more robust military presence in the region.  

“Through this investment, and the measures in Our North, Strong and Free, we are prioritising Arctic sovereignty to keep Canadians safe in a changing world.”
