Aberdeen City Council in Scotland has chosen Morrison Construction as the main contractor for the new multimillion-pound Aberdeen market development.

The site will be developed into a destination venue that will feature marketplace elements along with outlets offering international food and drink, as well as a retail area.

Morrison Construction intends to collaborate with other local enterprises for the upcoming subcontracting work.

The previous BHS-owned building on the site has been demolished, with legal work ongoing in preparation for the project’s next step.

The new market’s updated planning proposal has also been filed.

The city council will utilise £20m from the UK’s Levelling Up Fund, which will be used to create the market building and surrounding streetscaping.

Aberdeen City Council co-leader and councillor Ian Yuill said: “The market development will create a vibrant and exciting new destination for people to visit in the city centre, as well as create an improved connection between Union Street, The Green, and the bus and train stations.

“It is good a Scottish company is to be the main contractor for the new market which will provide a range of food and drink outlets, providing a boost to the local economy as well as helping Union Street and the city centre continue to move forward.”
