The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MHTC) has selected contractor Millstone Weber for the first project in the Missouri Department of Transportation’s (MoDOT) Improve I-70 Program in the US.

The MHTC chose Millstone Weber as the apparent best-value proposer and design-build contractor, in collaboration with designer Jacobs.

The contract finalisation negotiations are currently underway.

MHTC chair Terry Ecker said: “Today’s contractor selection marks the beginning of this generational opportunity to improve I-70, which serves as a critical economic east-west corridor across Missouri.

“This is a major challenge to deliver, but our MoDOT team working alongside the private-sector partners in engineering and construction will deliver.”

The Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City project, valued at $405m, is the first in a series aimed at widening and upgrading the I-70 corridor.

The project’s scope includes planning, designing, constructing, and rehabilitating.

It entails the construction of a third lane in each direction on around 200 miles of I-70, stretching from Blue Springs to Wentzville.

The programme will also involve the enhancement of the 20-mile segment of I-70 between US 63 in Columbia and US 54 in Kingdom City.

The proposal details the addition of new concrete pavement for all lanes, wider shoulders, and enhanced interchange designs at the US 63 and US 54 junctions.

To ensure minimal disruption during construction, two lanes will remain open in both directions during peak hours.

Construction is expected to commence this year, with completion anticipated by 31 December 2027, within the programme budget.

This project comes after the MoDOT awarded the contract for the design and construction of the I-70 Missouri River Bridge near Rocheport in Missouri to a team led by Lunda Construction, in 2021.
