L&T Construction’s Transportation Infrastructure business has been awarded a contract by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) to construct an 87.6km section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project.

L&T has classified the order as ‘mega’ contract, which is valued at more than INR70bn ($943m).

The latest contract for the C6 package of MAHSR follows an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract awarded for the C4 package of the MAHSR project.

The order to construct the 237.1km stretch MAHSR – C4 package is claimed to be the biggest EPC contract awarded in the country to date and is the first of its kind project with a mandate to construct.

The scope of work, under the C6 package, will involve the construction of viaducts, station, major river bridges, maintenance depots, as well as other auxiliary works.

According to the construction company, the C6 package of the MAHSR project represents nearly 17.2% of the total length that runs from the outskirts of Vadodara to the outskirts of Ahmedabad in state of Gujarat with one station at Anand / Nadiad.

The 508km MAHSR project, popularly referred as the Bullet Train project, will include 155.76km in the state of Maharashtra, 4.3km in the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and 348.04km in Gujarat with 12 stations along the route.

When completed, the high-speed rail project will operate at a speed of 320kmph and cover the whole distance in about two hours with limited stops and in three hours with all stops.
