Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Construction’s Railways Strategic Business Group has secured a contract to construct the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Project (Phase 2A).

The order, received through its Japanese partner Sojitz, is the company’s first engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) railway systems order in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region.

Under the contract, L&T will be responsible for the designing and building of track work, and procuring and delivering various systems such as overhead contact systems, power distribution systems, substation systems, signalling systems, telecommunication systems, a supervisory control and data acquisition facility, and platform screen doors.

The company will adopt a design-and-build basis approach for the multiple systems, as well as for overall system integration.

It will also undertake upgrades to the existing operations control centre and phase-one equipment.

In a press statement, L&T said that governments of the countries in the ASEAN region have recently increased their infrastructure budgets to expand their urban rail systems.

The Jakarta MRT Phase 2 Project is divided into two stages, with Phase 2A between Bundaran HI and Kota and Phase 2B involving the route from Kota to West Ancol.

Phase 2A extends the existing MRT line, adding approximately 12.5km and seven underground stations.

L&T said it is currently involved in similar integrated railway systems projects in Mauritius and Dhaka, Bangladesh.
