Komatsu Mining, a provider of advanced equipment, systems and direct services to the mining industry, has begun construction on its new headquarters and manufacturing campus in Wisconsin, US.

Located in Milwaukee’s Harbor District on east Greenfield Avenue, the company’s South Harbor Campus will cover an area of 2.5 million ft².

It will reinforce the company’s commitment to Milwaukee as a large machining, heavy fabrication and engineering centre of excellence.

Recently, the mining equipment provider has bought two parcels of land totalling nearly 57 acres to build the project.

Collaborating with the state of Wisconsin and the city of Milwaukee, Komatsu Mining plans to invest about $285m to deliver its new project.

The new campus will feature purpose-built, modern manufacturing facilities, advanced technology, robotics, engineering and R&D labs; a large office complex, training facilities, a data solutions centre and an experience centre.

Komatsu Mining president and CEO Jeff Dawes said: “Building this state-of-the-art facility with a focus on prioritizing technology, supports our commitment to developing and delivering innovative solutions for our global customers.

“Our goal is to create a remarkable workplace for our employees that provides space to grow, will serve as a global centre of excellence for Komatsu and demonstrates a sincere commitment to sustainability and our community.”

Pre-construction work on the project is in progress since the end of 2019. The company plans to occupy the new campus by 2022.

The new campus will include sustainable features such as solar panels, wind spires, a remotely operated closed-loop heat treat system, green spaces and LED lighting.

With the green elements, the mining equipment firm aims to reduce energy consumption by 75% and reduce water consumption by 80%, compared to its existing operations.

Komatsu Mining is partnering with Hunzinger Construction Co, EUA, & GRAEF to deliver the project.

The new campus will allow Komatsu Mining to increase the permanent, full-time employees in Milwaukee to about 1,000 family-supporting jobs.
