Kier has formally commenced work on the £9.5m redevelopment project in Colchester, Essex, the UK.

The scope of work on the project involves demolition of existing Elfreda House, a 55-year-old sheltered housing complex for vulnerable residents, and building a new accommodation at the site.

The new three-storey replacement building will feature 36 self-contained one- and two-bedroom units, with self-contained bathrooms, living rooms and kitchens.

The project will also include lifts and shared communal spaces for the residents to socialise.

Work on the redevelopment project is expected to be completed in Spring 2023.

Colchester Borough Homes Board chair Dirk Paterson said: “The redevelopment of Elfreda House is an exciting and much-needed project to provide high-quality homes to older residents in Colchester. It’s well known that good quality housing has a positive impact on a person’s life and the surrounding community.

“Colchester Borough Homes is proud to support the Council achieve its ambitious housing strategy and I look forward to eventually meeting the new tenants and seeing how their new home has changed their life.”

Earlier this year, Kier Eastern & Midlands completed another sheltered housing project for Bedford Borough Council and SMART Bedford.

Last month, the company commenced work on the £9.6m project at Southview SEND School and New Rickstones Academy in Witham, Essex.

At Southview SEND School, the project will create 24 sixth form spaces and ten residential spaces for pupils.

Kier will also construct a new block that will include two science labs, a science prep room, and seven general classrooms at New Rickstones Academy.
