North Somerset Council and Cabot Learning Federation have appointed Kier to deliver a new £30.5m expansion of Winterstoke Hundred Academy in Weston-Super-Mare, UK.

Funded by Housing Infrastructure Fund of Homes England, the new net zero carbon school building will provide additional space for 900 pupils at the academy.

The new three-storey 80,000m2 building was procured through the Southern Construction Framework. It is expected to support North Somerset Council’s commitment to make North Somerset carbon neutral by 2030.

Kier said that the school building is designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating and have a 10% biodiversity net gain.

To reduce carbon emissions, the building will include an on-site energy generation and a recycling centre

It will also include an extra bike storage to provide a sustainable option of cycling to school for students.

Recently, the company was appointed to design and construct a new 16,700m2 clinical buildings at Luton & Dunstable (L&D) University Hospital in the UK.

The project involves design and construction of a new acute services block and a new ward block.
