A 1 Lohne Bramsche, a joint venture (JV) between Johann Bunte Bauunternehmung and STRABAG has secured a €600m contract to widen nearly 30km on the A1 motorway in Lower Saxony, Germany.
The function-based construction (FSB) contract was awarded by Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, representing the Government of Germany to widen a road stretch between Lohne/Dinklage and Bramsche.
The project is expected to begin from February 2021 and will include widening from two lanes to three lanes in each direction.
Under the joint venture, Johann Bunte will be the technical lead for the project, while Strabag will take the commercial lead.
The motorway will remain open for traffic during the whole construction period and it is expected to be completed by mid-2025. The contract also includes structural maintenance over the next three decades.
The project includes extensive earthworks and construction of carriageways. Also, 14 bridges along the motorway section and two overpasses over the motorway must also be rebuilt completely, along with the rehabilitation of 18 bridges.

By GlobalDataThe JV plans to complete the project in eight phases. The first five phases will include widening of the motorway in the direction of Osnabrück between 2021 and 2022.
The last three phases will include widening and new construction work in the direction of Bremen.
Strabag CEO Thomas Birtel said: “The widening of the motorway from four to six lanes will eliminate a bottleneck on the busy A1.
