South Korea-based Hyundai Motor Group has broken ground on its innovation centre in Singapore that will entail an investment of S$400m ($294.2m).
The new seven-storey facility, dubbed Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center in Singapore (HMGICS), will serve as an open innovation lab for the group’s future mobility research and development activities.

The virtual ground-breaking ceremony was attended by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong; Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Sung Yun-mo; and Hyundai Motor Group executive vice-chairman Euisun Chung.
Located in the Jurong Innovation District, HMGICS occupies a footprint of 44,000m2 with the building covering 28,000m2. The facility can produce up to 30,000 vehicles per year by 2025.
Hyundai stated that customers can customise and buy vehicles online using a smartphone in future. Once the order is placed, the company will commence production immediately using its on-demand technology.
The innovation centre will allow customers to watch their car being manufactured at the facility. When the car is ready for the delivery, it will be shifted to the 620m-long Sky Track where customer can test drive the vehicle. Sky Track will sit atop HMGICS’ innovation facility.

By GlobalDataHMGICS will also include a landing port for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) as well as solar panels offering the site with clean renewable energy.
The centre will expand its use of renewable energy to use fuel cell as a power supply to reduce emissions from power generation.
It will also serve as a testbed for a human-centred intelligent manufacturing platform with small scale EV production facility on site.
The facility will use the latest ‘Industry 4.0’ smart technologies, such as AI, IoT and robotics.
Construction of the site will be completed by the end of 2022.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said: “HMGICS is a major step forward for Hyundai Motor. The facility is the first of its kind in the world. It will pave the way for more Korean companies to invest here, partner with local suppliers and SMEs, and collaborate with our universities and research institutes.
“Singapore’s goal is to have all our vehicles run on cleaner energy by 2040, in line with our Paris Agreement commitments. We hope this will open up new growth areas for our economy, and create exciting jobs for Singaporeans.”
