Clark Contracts has been selected by Retail Trust for a £1m ($1.25m) renovation project at its Hugh Fraser Retirement Estate in Newton Mearns.

It is aimed at establishing a new community hub for the elderly and the wider East Renfrewshire community.

The project involves the refurbishment of three unused spaces within Crookfur House on the estate.

The new facilities are anticipated to serve more than 1,000 local individuals annually, focusing on those at risk of isolation and with chronic health conditions.

In addition, the Retail Trust’s community café and reception area will undergo a comprehensive upgrade.

Upon completion later this year, the hub will offer activities, including gentle exercise classes, craft groups, film nights, quizzes, and indoor bowls.

According to the council’s Planning for the future report, East Renfrewshire is said to have the fourth-highest proportion of residents with long-term health issues in Scotland.

The new hub will address the local population’s needs by introducing disability and health support groups.

A groundbreaking was held recently to mark the commencement of the renovation, attended by residents of the Hugh Fraser Retirement Estate, the Clark Contracts team, and project funders.

This event signified the beginning of a project that promises to enhance the quality of life for many.

East Renfrewshire Council, Talking Points East Renfrewshire, Men’s Shed, Helping Hands, and Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire are backing this project.

It has secured funding from various organisations, including the Hugh Fraser Foundation, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ Community Ownership Fund, and more.

Retail Trust property and supported living managing director Lawrence Coen said: “We’ve worked closely with our residents and organisations like Voluntary Action, Age Concern and East Renfrewshire Council to develop our plans and we’re really pleased with the help and funding we have now secured from a number of other important partners.”

Clark Contracts has previously completed two phases of construction between 2018 and 2020, adding 46 new retirement apartments to the estate.

Last month, Clark Contracts was reappointed by the University of Glasgow for the multi-contractor Construction Framework Agreement.
