Ground has been broken on an international sports complex in Naranpura of Ahmedabad, a western city of India.

The ground was broken by the Indian Home Minister Amit Shah.

This would be an Olympics-level sports complex to be built on a 20-acre land.

This land was acquired at a cost of approximately $150m (Rs 12bn).

The complex will feature six sections including an aquatic stadium, an indoor multi-sports arena, a sports excellence centre, and a community sports centre.

The sports complex is being constructed at the cost of $81.50m (Rs 6.32bn).

It will have a capacity to accommodate 300 athletes and staff.

The sports complex will feature a parking space for over 800 two-wheelers and over 400 four-wheelers upon its completion.

The Naranpura sports complex will be built in 30 months.

Home Minister Amit Shah said that with Sardar Patel Stadium, Narendra Modi stadium, and the upcoming Naranpura sports complex, “Ahmedabad is becoming the sports city of Gujarat and preparing for the Olympics.”

Meanwhile, the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has allocated $12.25m (Rs950m) in its budget for acquiring land in Varanasi to build an international cricket stadium.

Once constructed, this would be the third international stadium in the state after Green Park in Kanpur, and Ekna Stadium in Lucknow.

The stadium is likely to be built in Gunjari village of Raja Talab Tehsil.

It is expected to be built on 30 acres and located 15km from Varanasi, which currently has two stadiums built on 15 acres land each.
