Granite has secured a subcontract to support the United Airlines Terminal B Airside Transformation programme at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, US.

The $2bn programme is funded by United Airlines and the City of Houston’s Houston Airport System.

Awarded by United Airlines and Manhattan Construction, the latest subcontract is worth $89m.

It involves the renovation of the north and south concourses of Terminal B.

Granite’s scope of work includes the demolition and reconstruction of the existing north concrete apron.

This is said to pave the way for the construction of a new terminal designed to accommodate additional gates and offer modern amenities for passengers.

The project encompasses approximately 126,000 square yards of demolition, as well as 154,000 square yards of concrete paving for the new apron and service roads.

It also comprises associated earthwork, utility coordination, and drainage work.

Granite area manager Domingo Gonzalez said: “Granite has a successful history of providing crucial infrastructure projects that enhance connectivity and create opportunities for businesses in the Houston area.

“Our team is proud to be part of the project delivering important enhancements to IAH’s Terminal B, which will benefit millions of travellers in the coming years.”

This project will bolster Granite’s ongoing efforts to expand its operational presence in the Greater Houston area and solidify Houston as a Home Market for the Texas Region of the company.

The commencement of the project is set for mid-2024, with completion expected in April 2026.

This project will be accounted for in Granite’s 2024 second-quarter committed and awarded projects.

Earlier this month, Granite Construction also secured a contract for the retrofit of off-site infrastructure at Ontario International Airport’s east-end runway in California, US.
