The $12.3bn Gateway Project has secured final approval, which will allow digging for new commuter rail tunnel between New York and New Jersey to begin as soon as August 2023.

The construction of the project will begin following receipt of federal funding, which is expected to be in place by end of 2022.

The approval from the US Army Corps of Engineers enables digging for the new tunnel under the Hudson River.

This project also covers repairing the present link as it more than 100 years old.

This current link is an important part of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor line, carrying over 2,200 trains between Washington and Boston daily.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said: “This step brings us much closer to the beginning of construction on the Hudson Tunnel Project, which is part of the single-largest critical infrastructure effort in the nation.”

The Gateway project has been halted under former President Donald Trump; however, now it has secured important federal approvals this year.

The funding for the project will be split between New York, New Jersey and the US government.

US President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have considered Gateway a priority.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said: “The Gateway project will help support the economic prosperity of New York and the rest of the country for years to come.”

The construction of the new tunnel and rehabilitation of old tunnels is estimated to be completed by 2035.
