Emporia State University (ESU) in the US has broken ground on its new Nursing and Student Wellness Building.

This marks the first new academic structure to be erected on the university’s campus in the last four decades.

ESU academic affairs provost and vice-president Brent Thomas said: “The cost of this building should not be viewed as a price tag but as an investment.

“It’s an important investment in our community. It’s an important investment in our region. It’s an important investment in our academic programmes, and it’s an important investment in the university. But most importantly this is a continued demonstration of the investment that ESU is making in our students.”

The 32,000ft² facility is designed to enhance the academic experience for nursing students and promote student wellness.

The new building will feature a Simulation Hospital Suite, with training labs and simulation rooms.

These facilities will cater to adult care, obstetrics, emergency care, and paediatric care.

In addition, the building will house multiple classrooms, a dynamic learning commons, and conference rooms.

A dedicated student success centre is also part of the design, all aimed at supporting students throughout their academic journey.

The completion of this first phase is said to be crucial for transitioning the nursing programme to the main campus.

The second phase of the project will focus on the development of new clinical areas for ESU Student Wellness.

This division is responsible for delivering healthcare and counselling services to the university’s enrolled students.

The Nursing and Student Wellness Building is scheduled to open in late 2025.
