The Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced that road improvement works are underway in the municipalities of Koronadal and Tupi in South Cotabato in the country.

The DPWH is currently carrying out these updates that are intended to improve road safety and support trade in Central Mindanao.

The two projects will see asphalt overlaying works and the reblocking of damaged road portions along Maharlika Highway.

In a report to DPWH secretary Manuel Bonoan, DPWH Region 12 director Basir Ibrahim noted that the two projects are being carried out with a total budget of 335.5m pesos ($6m) provided via the the 2023 General Appropriations Act.

The Koronadal maintenance project spans 2.2km along the six-lane Midsayap-Marbel Road section in Barangay Sarabia and 1.5km along the Marbel-Makar Road segment in Barangay Crossing Rubber, Tupi.

Ibrahim said: “Both projects are almost complete with more than 80% accomplishment rate, hence motorists can expect ease of travel along Maharlika Highway, just in time for the holiday rush.

“Upon completion, these projects will greatly contribute in hastening the delivery of agricultural products, reducing logistical costs, and producing higher income returns brought by increased local economic activities.”

The road improvements come as part of the DPWH’s Asset Preservation Program, which aims to guarantee the safety of commuters and extend the service life of county roads.

The DPWH finished the road widening work in Koronadal City in January 2020. Following this upgrade, commuting from Koronadal City, South Cotabato, to General Santos City became more convenient.

Last month, the DPWH provided a construction update on the Bagong Tondo Sports Complex Project in Manila, also in the Philippines.

The second phase of the project is currently on track and will be completed in the first quarter of next year.
