The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) of the Philippines has broken ground for four facilities at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) campus in Laguna.

The projects launched in UPLB involves construction of a five-storey food processing research and development centre, a two-storey agricultural and economic development studies centre, and a two-storey microbial bank for the Biotech Philippine National Collection of Microorganisms.

The rehabilitation plan of the University Health Services Operating Room Complex is intended to provide medical care comparable to that in private hospitals.

Construction of these facilities is estimated to cost PHP485m ($8.6m) and is being implemented by DPWH Regional Office 4A.

Last week, DPWH began work on the multi-million San Miguel Bridge Project in the town of San Simon, Pampanga Province.

DPWH will replace an old steel bridge along San Simon-Baliwag Road, crossing the Pampanga River.

The current bridge is accessible only to light vehicles.

This project will see construction of a 388.29-lineal meters two-lane permanent bridge with a 238.03m approach under the Bridge Construction Replacement Program 1.

It will cost $5.69m (PHP316.48m).

The project will be implemented by the DPWH Unified Project Management Office Bridges Management Cluster (UPMO-BMC).

Once completed, it will become an all-weather bridge with types of vehicles being able to commute.

The San Miguel 1 Bridge Replacement Project is aimed to be finished in July 2024.
