BNBuilders and its design-build partner Roesling Nakamura Terada (RNT) Architect’s design and construction plan for the Fullerton College’s campus expansion has been submitted to the Division of the State Architect (DSA) of California, US, for review.
The DSA offers design and construction oversight for state facilities and schools so that all structural, accessibility, fire and life safety codes are adhered according to the relevant standards.
This $55m project is the college’s first new construction in ten years.
Once complete, the new Instructional Building at Fullerton College will accommodate the Humanities division, which consists of the English, English as a Second Language, foreign languages, besides speech and communication departments.
The Humanities Division currently occupies 36 classrooms, most of which are in temporary facilities spread across the campus.
By 2030, this division will require an estimated 12 more lecture halls.

By GlobalDataThe new Instructional Building will offer these lecture facilities, tutoring rooms and faculty office spaces.
The Instructional Building site is situated close to contributor buildings on the Fullerton College campus.
RNT Architects principal Ralph Roesling said: “The new Instructional Building will meet the fine balance of being differentiated from the adjacent historic district contributors, but also compatible with the massing, size, scale, and architectural features of those buildings.
“With a gabled roof, clay Mission tiles, prominent arches, and ornate iron work, the building will complement the style of its neighbouring historic buildings.”
The building’s cooling will come from the campus central plant located 550ft north-northwest of the project site.
Furthermore, an expansion of the current existing chilled water plant will be an integral part of the new development.
These projects are expected to break ground in early 2020.
BNBuilders principal Jamie Awford said: “We’ve enjoyed a truly collaborative process working closely with Fullerton College to deliver this $55m project using progressive design-build.
“This delivery method has enabled the entire team to make informed decisions with confidence, maintaining the budget and schedule at all times.
“The new Instructional Building integrates within the existing historic campus with several sustainable features and will serve the students and staff for decades, as well as the new efficient central plant that will serve the entire campus’ current and future needs.”
