The Government of Western Australia has announced that the construction work on the $61.4m Newman Health Service redevelopment project is on track.

BHP Iron Ore (BHP) has invested nearly $15m in the new modern health services project.

The facility will include expanded six-bay emergency department, 12 inpatient beds, an outpatient centre, medical imaging, pathology, purpose-built GP consultation spaces and two dental chairs.

It is being construction beside the existing hospital building to ensure minimal disruption to patients, staff as well as the community.

Western Australia Health Minister Roger Cook said: “The Newman Health Service will be a fit-for-purpose, brand new hospital and health centre where the local community can access care closer to home and on country.

“The capacity for treating critically ill and injured patients will expand to have two resuscitation bays, three treatment bays and a procedural room.

“The Newman Health Service will be a modern and attractive workplace to help us continue to attract and retain the best and brightest clinicians to regional Western Australia.”

The first phase of the redevelopment project includes construction of the emergency department and inpatient beds and is scheduled to be completed in 2022.

Once operational in 2023, the Newman community will have access to health services including occupational health, physiotherapy and mental health under one roof with the brand-new hospital.

Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said: “This project will modernise local health facilities and create local jobs during construction.

“The hospital will be telehealth-enabled throughout, for 24/7 access to emergency and other specialists and include state-of-the-art ICT to ensure capacity in a rapidly evolving digital healthcare environment.”
