A consortium of Abu Dhabi-owned Masdar, Infinity Power Holdings and Egypt’s Hassan Allam Utilities has plans to commence construction of a $11bn wind farm project in Egypt in 2024 and make it operational by 2030, reported Arab News.

Claimed to be one of the largest wind farms to be built in Egypt, the 10MW project, following completion, is expected to deliver electricity to Saudi Arabia and Europe, reported Bloomberg.

Infinity Power chairman Mohamed Mansour said that the consortium is scouting for land to build the project this year. These could primarily be built at two locations in the country’s Western Desert region – one near Minya and the other at Aswan.

These locations are considered suitable for such a project given that wind speed in these areas could reach 10 meters per second.

During the UN’s Climate Change Summit, Egypt and the UAE signed a memorandum of understanding to build this wind power project.

As per the Information and Decision Support Center of the Egyptian Cabinet, the country topped the list of Arab countries in terms of wind and solar power generation in July, achieving 3.5GW capacity, and plans to achieve 6.8GW in 2024.

Earlier in November, Masdar, Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU ) with Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy to build the 10GW onshore wind project.

This project will help displace 23.8 million tonnes of carbon emissions, and is estimated to save around $5bn in annual natural gas costs for Egypt.
