Coal India Limited (CIL) has signed a $660m (Rs54bn) memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rajasthan Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL) to develop 1.19GW solar power plant at Bikaner in the Indian state of Rajasthan.

The solar power plant will be developed at a 2GW solar park being built by RVUNL in Poogal area of Bikaner, according to PTI report posted on The Economic Times.

The MoU was signed by RVNUL CMD R K Sharma and Coal India Limited technical director V Reddy.

The state government has allotted 4,846ha of land for the solar park, where RVUNL will build its own 810MW solar power project, while 1.19GW will be developed by CIL, reported Mint.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying: “Rajasthan today has become a leading state in the field of renewable energy.

“With the introduction of new solar and wind energy policy, and simplification of rules by the state, continuous investment is coming in the field of renewable energy.”

The work related to production and assembly of equipment for the solar power plants will be undertaken in the state, which in turn will create new employment opportunities for the local people.

Rajasthan tops the list of states in India for developing 14.82GW solar power projects.

The state is claimed to have the world’s largest solar plant with a capacity of 2.24GW in Jodhpur district.

In March, Rajasthan announced plans to develop two new solar parks of 1.8GW in Jaisalmer and Bikaner districts.
