Clark Contracts has completed the construction of the new indoor tennis centre (ITC) within Oriam at Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh campus in Scotland.

Oriam is Scotland’s primary sports performance centre.

Construction on the £4.5m ($5.68m) ITC began in September 2022, and its doors opened to the public in December 2023.

The centre is said to feature some of the finest acrylic playing surfaces in the country.

The official opening of the facility took place last week.

It caters to both recreational and competitive tennis players with six courts available for use by communities from West Edinburgh, West Lothian, Midlothian, and Fife.

Funding for the project was secured through a partnership between Oriam, Heriot-Watt University, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), LTA Tennis Foundation, and others, using the Transforming Scottish Indoor Tennis fund.

Clark Contracts director Michael Scanlan said: “It has been great to work with Heriot-Watt University and the design team to deliver this state-of-the-art centre in Edinburgh and be involved in the creation of a positive learning space for future Scottish tennis athletes.”

A commemorative plaque was unveiled by the Scottish Government’s Mental Wellbeing and Sport Social Care Minister Maree Todd alongside Heriot-Watt University principal, vice-chancellor, and Professor Richard A Williams.

The Oriam ITC is an extension of the existing Oriam complex.

The complex includes indoor and outdoor synthetic pitches, multisport halls, a gym, and a physiotherapy clinic, among others.

This comes after Clark Contracts was contracted by Scotland’s Highland Council for the Bught Park improvement project in Inverness last year.
